Nox's Puppy Life

Nox Born July 16, 2017 is now 13 weeks old, and he just found out that he's finally coming home to us! Excited little puppy!
Welcome Home Nox!
Picked up from DFW Airport our puppy still confused about what had happened enjoyed a nice break in the grass!
Our First week! What a doozy! Having a hard time settling into our new home, we dealt with the typical puppy behavior, potty carpets, crying kennels, and play time, all the time. Warm water bottles, fuzzy blankets, treats and cuddles soothed the wimpers, and the Cam2Pet app helped keep an eye on him in his kennel while we we're at work.

Our first Bone!

After the first few days, he settled in to wanting to have mommy and daddy in sight at all times, was shy of other dogs, just because they were bigger (for now) than he was but after he saw that his parents were ok with petting other puppies, Nox warmed up nicely, and made lots of new friends!

Now we look forward to our park time every night, and our walks in the morning, and when we visit for our lunch breaks!

Now as a confident and happy puppy, we've immediately started the basics at home with "sit" and "down" by using a recommendation from Petco of 101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance book.
Rewarding with extra helpings of raw ground up chicken with bone marrow for dinner for the good days and extra treats too!
Having such a successful first week at home, we decided to test out our "public" training. Every day Nox would come with me to pick up his daddy from work so we could practice one of the C.G.C. Training Steps of Easily Loading/ Unloading from a car, which went easier and easier with each passing day... Even with refusing to only ride shotgun most days.

Took our first walk around the outside of campus where he'll be learning his training while at work with Katie. All went well and seemed very excited to be here, understanding he's still a puppy, he's very docile for a German Shepherd, and is mostly quiet instead of always wanting to run, like German's usually are.
The day we got our first Vest making it easier to recognize him as a service dog. We tested ourselves at Kroger (a local grocery store) where he did great at walking beside the cart, and not trying to eat food from the shelves, til we had a small #2 accident by the fresh produce. I looked at him and got the look of "Omg mom,  I'm so sorry I just couldn't hold it!" I told him it was ok, it was an accident, with a firm "No." behind it, and we continued shopping.
So note to self:
When taking your pup out in public spaces for the first time bring the essentials:
Lysol Wipes, doggy bags, spray bottle, baby wipes, treats, and cards stating "please don't pet me"

For the most part out of 13 people only 4 asked
"Can I Pet him?" I responded
"Since he's a puppy and he's learning he can't be pet while in the vest,
if you really want to, can you only pet lightly and on the head?"
When doing this and the "only on the head" choice Nox seemed to understand"Oh, when I'm in the vest, the only one who can love on me is mommy?" and "I need to be on my best behavior in the vest."  after the Kroger trip, we went home had lots of treats and loving.

About 2 hours later, we decided to push the envelope and go inside Katie's place of work (Capital One) in a building that she doesn't work at, (But Daddy Does!) We went to pick up Alex, and when the vest went on, the light switch flipped to "Oh, I gotta be super good now!" Went inside through handicap doors, got in an elevator, sat patiently, didn't wine or have any accidents and everything went smooth as silk!!

On that note, when introducing a service dog to the workplace I find it best to not only let your managers, accommodation network, co workers and peers, know of the arrival well ahead of time. This makes it possible for those with allergies to prepare, move, and adjust. Also, I'm starting everyone off slow, and tempering into the situation. So Nox's first day at work, will be a Saturday (when there's less people at work, it's less crowded) and he'll only come for my lunch break for the first few weeks. Helping him, and co workers adjust. Once he gets good at the lunch breaks, we'll do full Saturday's before graduating to full time week schedules.

More to come soon,
xo
